Munich, 5 December 2024 – Technical University of Munich (TUM) proudly recognises the exceptional achievements of Professor Lam Khin Yong, a distinguished scientist, accomplished science manager, and steadfast supporter of TUM’s initiatives in Singapore, by conferring upon him the esteemed title of Honorary Senator.
Professor Lam holds the President’s Chair in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and has served since 2014 in various leadership roles as Vice President of Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. With over 300 publications and more than 12,000 citations, his research in computational mechanics, computer nanoscience, and multiscale simulations is internationally celebrated for its originality and impact. His remarkable contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious “Science and Technology Medal” from the President of Singapore.
For over 15 years, Professor Lam has been a cornerstone of TUM’s presence in Singapore. As an advocate and advisor, he has played an instrumental role in advancing the university’s education and research initiatives through TUM Asia and TUMCREATE.
Among his significant contributions:
- Spearheading the launch of the M.Sc. Aerospace Engineering programme, jointly offered by TUM and NTU at TUM Asia in 2009.
- Supporting the establishment of the Joint PhD agreement between TUM and NTU in 2010.
- Playing a critical role in integrating TUM as one of the founding partners of Singapore’s CREATE initiative, alongside MIT and ETH Zurich.
- Promoting pivotal research projects, including “Electromobility Megacities” under TUMCREATE.
Since 2018, Professor Lam has co-chaired the Governing Board of TUMCREATE alongside TUM President Thomas F. Hofmann further advancing the strategic partnership between the institutions. Most recently, his efforts have ensured that parts of TUM Asia will transition to the NTU campus in Singapore, catalysing even closer collaboration following NTU’s designation as TUM’s latest Flagship Partner.
“Professor Lam embodies the true spirit of collaboration and creativity,” said TUM President Thomas F. Hofmann. “His foresight and dedication have been instrumental in building trusted bridges between NTU and TUM, as well as between Singapore and Germany. His contributions have enabled us to pioneer globalised education by combining German engineering excellence with Asian ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit.”
The conferral of the title Honorary Senator acknowledges Professor Lam’s extraordinary career, unwavering dedication, and steadfast commitment to advancing science, education, and global collaboration. His achievements serve as an enduring inspiration to future generations and a source of pride for the entire university community.
