DOCTORAL STUDIES

After one’s Master studies, the pinnacle of academic studies is the doctoral degree.

Obtaining your doctorate is often regarded as the highest possible level of academic degree awarded to any individual. Doctoral studies is often known as the only time of a researcher or student’s academic journey where he or she can devote a significant amount of time to a specific area of research.

TUM Asia students who complete their Master degree, are able to apply for a doctoral position anywhere in the world. Some choose to continue their doctoral studies with TUM, and more information on this can be found in the TUM Graduate School page listed above.

Singapore citizens and permanent residents (PRs) may choose to complete their PhD in Singapore, where the Industrial PhD Programme will be applicable to you. Additionally, open positions at TUM CREATE, NTU or NUS will also be options for Master graduates to consider. Other positions in academic institutes worldwide will have to be self-sourced by the graduate himself/herself.

Full Support for PhD Candidates: TUM Graduate School

TUM Graduate School (TUM-GS)  promotes the networking and further qualification of doctoral candidates, thus combining the benefits of a traditional individual doctorate with its structured doctoral programs.

The traditional individual doctorate is based on a close collaboration between the doctoral candidate and his/her supervisor in the department or institute. Ph.D. candidates mainly work independently on their research project and are supported by their dissertation supervisor. At the same time, they are involved in the work of the department. In this way, doctoral candidates develop their identity as independent researchers.

TUM Graduate School supplements the proven individual doctorate with elements that support doctoral candidates and their supervisors. That includes structural measures and qualification offerings based on the best international standards, for instance the early conclusion of a supervision agreement, regular feedback meetings, subject-specific courses as well as offerings for interdisciplinary qualification and financial support for research stays abroad.
