Professor Hornung received his doctorate in aeronautical engineering from the University of the Bundeswehr (Federal Armed Forces) in Neubiberg. His thesis on reusable space transport systems was awarded a research prize in 2003. From 2003 to 2009 he worked in the Military Air Systems Division of the Airbus Group (formerly EADS) on propulsion systems integration, program management and business development.
