Meet Zhipu – Our TUM Asia Alumnus and PhD Researcher

Zhipu, PhD student at TUM Asia (second from the left)

Designing smarter public transport with AI and autonomous mobility.

What’s your research about, in a sentence?

Zhipu is developing AI-powered systems to integrate autonomous modular vehicles into public transport networks, blending fixed routes with on-demand flexibility for more seamless, efficient urban travel.

“The future of mobility is flexible, connected, and human-centric.”

What inspired this research?

It all began with a fascination for the rhythm of city life, how thousands of people move through complex urban systems each day. The idea of using AI and automation to make that flow smarter and more efficient is what drives Zhipu’s work today.

Real-world impact

Many cities struggle with fragmented mobility systems. Zhipu’s research contributes to more coordinated urban transport including reducing detours, minimising transfers, and improving operational efficiency. It’s research that could directly shape the next generation of public transit.

What’s next after the PhD?

Whether in academia or industry, Zhipu wants to stay at the cutting edge of intelligent transport systems, translating research into real solutions that shape the cities of tomorrow.

Zhipu graduated from TUM’s Master of Science in Rail, Transport and Logistics. Learn more about him 此处.

   Most enjoyed about Singapore:

  • The transport system (naturally!), lush green spaces, and the city’s balance of safety and innovation.

   Unwinding rituals:

  • Jogging, badminton with friends, books on life and tech, and sparking ideas in conversations with fellow researchers.

   Favourite quote:

  • “Do what you love.” by Steve JobsIt reminds Zhipu that passion leads him through challenges and gives meaning to every step.

   Fun fact:

  • Long commutes on foot, train, or plane are Zhipu’s best thinking time.
