An intrepid explorer for learning

Gu Zhaosu, Class of 2024, MSc in Green Electronics

For Zhaosu, he wanted to see the world beyond his horizon.

So when he learned about the joint master’s in green electronics with Nanyang Technological University Singapore, and TUM taught at the Singapore campus of TUM—TUM Asia, he made the decision without hesitation.

It has been a game-changer ever since.

“I don’t think I would have attained the opportunity to experience both the cultures of Singapore and Germany if I had not chosen TUM Asia,” said Gu Zhao.

xxThe opportunity would have come sooner during his bachelor’s day when he had a similar opportunity to study in Scotland, but the global pandemic, which was on the leash worldwide, dashed the hopes of him and many other students who aspired to study overseas.

Yet there was nothing to temper his determination to taste life beyond, even at the height of the global pandemic. And as one door closes, another opens. For Zhaosu, it was TUM Asia.

“Some Asian companies don’t know TUM a lot, and some European companies don’t know NTU a lot, so attaining a degree recognised in both parts of the world is very attractive for me to stand out regardless of where I want to work. Besides, I would have the opportunity to learn from some of the most brilliant minds from different cultures, perspectives and insights and experience life beyond,” Zhaosu shared.

Beyond learning, he was eager to experience life in Germany as he sought opportunities at the various chairs at TUM.

“I always had the intention to pursue my internship and master’s thesis in Munich, so I began emailing various Chairs within TUM to seek opportunities. It was challenging as there was always uncertainty between replies, and at the same time, there was also interest among local companies who offered me internship opportunities. It was a gamble, but I am glad I took it,” said Zhaosu.

Thankfully, the odds were in his favour. Not only did his learning journey at TUM in Singapore and Germany catapult him into Europe, it also put him squarely into the thick of action in the research landscape with one of the best universities in the world.

“I enjoyed my time at TUM tremendously. My professors and peers were encouraging and often supported me in exploring Munich and beyond with my laptop. Besides, the trust and confidence they gave me to complete my master’s thesis with quality and precision was refreshing.

The multitude of possibilities that could spring out from his stint at TUM in Munich not only induced a powerful sense of confidence in Zhaosu but it has also given him the drive to make a mark with the PhD position he secured at the Chair of  Simulation of Nanosystems for Energy Conversion under Prof. Dr. Alessio Gagliardi.
