From one of five pioneers to Head of Undergraduate Programme, Zara\u2019s journey is a story of quiet leadership, steady, sincere, and deeply people-centred. <\/i><\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t
\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

When Zara joined TUM Asia on 19 June 2006, there were only five of them.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Five people. One office. A new institution at German Centre, finding its footing in Singapore.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Today, she leads the Undergraduate Programme under the Academic Services Department. But her story is inseparable from the story of TUM Asia itself because she was there when it began.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The Pioneer Spirit<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

Her first role was administrative, receptionist, front desk, everything-in-between. In a team that small, titles meant little. Everyone did what needed to be done.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Her first impression of the interviewer, now Vice President TUM Asia of TUM and Executive Director of TUM Asia, was paradoxical.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSmiley\u2026 but scary,\u201d she laughs.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Still, she sensed something deeper: Conviction. Vision. Stability.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIf there\u2019s no Markus, there\u2019s no TUM Asia,\u201d she says simply.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I see him, I feel safe.\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

That sense of safety would later become a defining thread in her own leadership.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Learning by Doing<\/span><\/b> <\/span><\/p>\n

In her very first year, she was sent to India, alone, for marketing and student recruitment. It was her first time travelling solo. Her first business trip.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

There was no playbook. Just trust and she delivered.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Soon after, she was tasked with managing a<\/span> Master\u2019s programme <\/span>including<\/span>,<\/span> recruitment, marketing, faculty coordination, examinations<\/span> for<\/span> four years.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Then came another turning point: the launch of a brand-new TUM undergraduate programme.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

She was asked to lead it.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was worried. Doubtful. I kept asking myself, can I really do this?\u201d<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

But she leaned on what she had built over time: experience, relationships, credibility.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

Instead of pretending to know everything, she went around asking for opinions. Listening. Inviting perspectives.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

It worked. Because leadership, to her, was never about standing above, it was about standing with.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A Culture of Openness<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Zara describes her approach simply: \u201cJust do the job.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Be sincere. Be honest. Be open.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Challenges will come. COVID was one of them.\u00a0Teaching methodologies\u00a0were reimagined.\u00a0Digital systems\u00a0were introduced. Expectations grew.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

But she never believed she had to carry the weight alone.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cThere\u2019s always someone to guide you.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

That belief\u00a0of enabling space for others to help one another,\u00a0is part of the culture she embodies. Open discussion. Receptiveness. No ego.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

As she progressed into Assistant Manager and beyond, responsibilities increased. Yet she describes the transition as manageable.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Because growth at TUM Asia was never abrupt,\u00a0it was steady\u00a0and supported.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

The Practice of Self-Reflection<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Even now, as a department head\u00a0for Undergraduate programmes managing SIT-TUM joint programmes, she asks herself quietly:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cAm I doing the right thing?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Leadership, for her, is less about authority and more about accountability,\u00a0to her team, to her peers, to the institution.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Teamwork anchors her decisions. She values open discussion. She sees colleagues not just as staff, but as partners.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

In her family, she plays a similar role,\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>coordinator<\/span>\u00a0in a big household, the one who steps up\u00a0<\/span>to gather ev<\/span>eryone\u00a0<\/span>when decisions must be made.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Among friends, she is often the natural leader.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Not loud. Not forceful.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Fulfilment in the Unseen Work<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Some of her proudest moments are not public milestones, but operational victories,\u00a0successful accreditations, implementing processes never tried before, seeing programmes run smoothly because the groundwork was done right.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

She never asked for\u00a0progression. Management noticed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Her career did not surge forward in dramatic leaps. It advanced because of consistency. Improvement. Reliability.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

She describes herself as \u201csteady and moving.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

And\u00a0perhaps that\u00a0is her greatest strength.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Quiet Leadership<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Zara believes in letting things run their course.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cSometimes the answer will reveal itself.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

She does not rush decisions. She does not lead through noise.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Her leadership is quiet\u00a0but deeply influential.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

It is the kind that builds systems that last. The kind that creates psychological safety. The kind that makes others feel supported enough to try.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

\u201cDon\u2019t be afraid to start small.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Growth\u00a0does not always announce itself with grand gestures. Sometimes it begins with five pioneers in a room. A first solo trip abroad. A hesitant yes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Nearly two\u00a0decades later, Zara\u00a0remains\u00a0what she has always been,\u00a0grounded, open,\u00a0people-centred.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>
