As the Class of 2025 turns the page to a new chapter, we spotlight one graduate whose story is a testament to perseverance, self-awareness, and steady growth. This year, Xu Nan graduates with a Master of Science in Integrated Circuit Design from TUM Asia and with it, the Best Student Award for the programme.<\/p>

His journey into the world of IC design wasn\u2019t always clear-cut. As an undergraduate in the UK, he explored various directions, including robotics and algorithms, but found himself repeatedly running into challenges.<\/p>

\u201cI struggled with my final-year project on robotics and algorithms. At the same time, I was learning about MOSFETs and digital circuits, and surprisingly, I didn\u2019t find them incomprehensible. That moment sparked my decision to dive deeper into IC design.\u201d<\/p>

Though he also received an offer from Imperial College London, he chose TUM Asia for its academic strength, more affordable living costs in Singapore, and the valuable internship opportunities offered through the programme.<\/p>

What set him apart was his willingness to try, fail, and refine. From grappling with fast-paced coursework to adapting to a new environment, he embraced the unfamiliar and grew through each experience.<\/p>

\u201cI never knew if this was the ‘right’ path. I just knew it wasn\u2019t the wrong one. I followed what felt better and made sure to keep improving. Getting an internship in the IC field validated my decision.\u201d<\/p>

Throughout his master\u2019s journey, hands-on lab work and real-world design problems brought theory to life. These experiences prepared him not just for exams, but for the complexity of the industry itself.<\/p>

\u201cLab classes made everything real. Solving unexpected problems while designing circuits helped me build practical skills I could take into an internship or job.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

A standout moment in his journey? Securing an internship in the IC field, where he learned how advanced technologies in industry differ from academic concepts and saw how every team member, regardless of role, contributes to the bigger picture.<\/p>

\u201cInitially, I worried that working in mid to back-end IC design wasn\u2019t as \u2018valuable.\u2019 But my mentors helped me see the bigger picture: in Singapore\u2019s IC industry, every role matters. That mindset helped me fully embrace the internship.\u201d<\/p>

His efforts didn\u2019t go unnoticed. Graduating at the top of his class, he was awarded the Best Student Award for the MSc in Integrated Circuit Design, a well-deserved recognition of both his academic excellence and personal growth.<\/p>

Behind this achievement is a story of quiet confidence earned through hard work. He admits to feeling anxious at first, comparing himself to peers from more prestigious undergraduate programmes but eventually proved to himself, and others, that he belonged.<\/p>

\u201cI was surprised to find that I could solve problems others couldn\u2019t. High grades and multiple scholarships boosted my confidence and changed how I viewed myself and my future.\u201d<\/p>

He is now an Integrated Circuit Designer at MediaTek Singapore, having converted his internship into a full-time role.<\/p>

\u201cI\u2019m not someone who enjoys big change. If I can stay in my current company and grow with a promotion and raise, I\u2019ll be satisfied.\u201d<\/p>

His advice for future students? Train your English listening skills, prepare for fast-paced exams, and apply for every opportunity you can.<\/p>

\u201cSome exams expect you to write 10+ pages in one hour so time management is key. And internship hunting can be long and frustrating, but don\u2019t panic. Keep calm, and stay consistent.\u201d<\/p>

Congratulations to this year\u2019s Best Student in MSc Integrated Circuit Design, and to the entire Class of 2025!
