Our team took the opportunity to speak to Dr. Hans Zeltinger, who teaches some of the logistics modules at TUM Asia. These modules are part of our Master of Science in Rail, Transport and Logistics, and are also being offered as short courses under our Professional Certificates.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Hi Dr. Zeltinger, tell us more about yourself.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Zeltinger:<\/strong>I was born in Germany\u2019s eldest town Trier. I am married and have 4 children and 7 grand children. I studied mathematics and business administration at the University of Bonn and completed my PhD in pure mathematics.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How has it been like working in different countries, such as Singapore?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Zeltinger: <\/strong>I worked for a few years at a Scientific Research Institute before starting my business career at Germany\u2019s biggest chemical and pharmaceutical company, Hoechst, within the IT and consulting department. It is nowadays known under the name of Sanofi-Aventis. Later, I was promoted to lead the Hoechst SAP competence center, which led me to work in Asia as Hoechst CIO for Asia, located in Singapore. This was about 25 years ago. During this time, I founded and ran a set of IT service companies in some relevant Asian countries, such as China, Hongkong, Australia, Singapore, and so on.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Looking back, what led you to teach at TUM Asia?<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Zeltinger: <\/strong>After my success in Asia, Daimler, the Mercedes Benz maker, offered me a similar job as Asian head of their IT service company. Unfortunately, I had to leave this career as Daimler was bought over by Deutsche Telekom. As such, I worked for 2 years in management consulting companies out of Singapore. I also decided to set up my own company as a management consulting company acting on the field of business re-organisation, business process management, data management and IT consulting. In 2005, TUM Asia approached me to hold some lectures in Production Planning for the Chemical Industry. Later on, other lectures followed on topics in Industrial Logistics, Green Supply Chain and Supply Chain Risk Management.<\/p>\n

\u201cStudents should be prepared for taking over management roles and they have to acquire the ability to see the big picture – to visualise processes from start to end. Companies expect students to show and apply their academic knowledge to add innovative ideas, think differently out of the box and be able to foresee what may happen.\u201d<\/span>
\nHow have the key drivers in the business landscape changed over the years?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Zeltinger:\u00a0<\/strong>Green ideas and risk awareness (besides digitisation and automation) are currently main drivers, not only for business, but also in our private and community life. They are hot topics on the political agenda, mainly driven by buzz words such as climate change, global warming, Fukushima, and most recently COVID-19.<\/p>\n

Climate change and global warming are so important, that both have the capability to change our lives and the way we are doing business. When these lectures started 10 years ago, the focus was on creating awareness. We moved on to acquire and share knowledge on specific methods on how companies should deal with these issues. As awareness has grown up into boards of management and governments all over the world, these challenges can now be tackled from strategic levels. Sustainability now also covers environmental or green aspects, social aspects and financial aspects; all known by the term 3P \u2013 People \u2013 Planet \u2013 Profit.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What is the greatest challenge faced by the logistics industry?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Zeltinger: <\/strong>Globali<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>ation<\/span><\/span>\u00a0lost its speed,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0which was affected by<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Trump\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u2018<\/span><\/span>America\u00a0<\/span><\/span>F<\/span><\/span>irst<\/span><\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/span>\u00a0campaign<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the trade war between USA and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>China<\/span><\/span>. This left\u00a0<\/span><\/span>uncomfortable feelings\u00a0<\/span><\/span>about\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>disadvantages of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>globali<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>ation<\/span><\/span>\u00a0among<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a reasonable amount\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0US and EU population<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u7269\u6d41\u00a0<\/span><\/span>h<\/span><\/span>as always<\/span><\/span>\u00a0been<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a highly competitive business<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and competition will continue to increase. In the past, speed and global coverage have been the main driver. In<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0future<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0sustainability and risk awareness<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>mitigation will become a unique selling point<\/span><\/span>\u00a0together with the growing task of integrated real<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>time communication across all platforms<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

How can logistics companies be prepared for such challenges?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Zeltinger: <\/strong>Logistics compan<\/span><\/span>ies<\/span><\/span>\u00a0must show their strategy to become carbon neutral<\/span><\/span>\u00a0and to be risk aware<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>This\u00a0<\/span><\/span>will be pushed by customers and stronger government regulations<\/span><\/span>, which will result in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>climate-friendly <\/span><\/span>investments<\/span><\/span>\u00a0into<\/span><\/span>\u00a0transportation devices on land<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0air<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0sea<\/span><\/span> and a higher readiness against all part of potential disruptions<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>T<\/span><\/span>he<\/span><\/span>\u00a0transformation of old<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>fashioned manual tasks into modern\u00a0<\/span><\/span>digiti<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>ed<\/span><\/span>automated\u00a0<\/span><\/span>workflows (with seamless machine-to-machine communication)\u00a0<\/span><\/span>can be regarded as a revolution and that cloud computing will be\u00a0<\/span><\/span>vital in the<\/span><\/span>future.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Why is Green Supply Chain so important today? <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Zeltinger:\u00a0<\/strong>Green supply chain addressed the three challenges of our most important resources for surviving: air, water, and energy. Clean Air, clean and sufficient water, clean energy and the careful handling of limited resources are required t<\/span>o address sustainability<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I<\/span>n my opinion, it is\u00a0<\/span>of importance that our students who will be among the next generation of managers are aware of these challenges and how to approach them, once they\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>climbed into higher management positions\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0students will become familiar with the ISO method of Risk Management and apply this to supply chains. How companies and their supply chain partner<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0become agile and resilient is much more difficult\u00a0<\/span>than formal<\/span>\u00a0ISO methods. C<\/span>OVID<\/span>-19 and Fukushima are\u00a0<\/span>two<\/span> excellent examples of heavy supply chain <\/span>dis<\/span>ruptions<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>However, even in<\/span>\u00a0daily operations<\/span>, the occurrence of\u00a0<\/span>minor interruptions or even delays<\/span>\u00a0are much more<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For both topics<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>ther<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0are<\/span>\u00a0highly strategic approaches as well as operational solutions, which every employee\u00a0<\/span>in future\u00a0<\/span>must<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>pay attention to<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n


\nWhat is the biggest takeaway in Green Supply Chain and Risk Management for Singapore?<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Zeltinger: <\/strong>Besides\u00a0<\/span>Digitalisation<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>Green Supply Chain and Sustainability<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>hot<\/span>\u00a0topics in\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>logistics\u00a0<\/span>industry<\/span>, influencing all part of transportation modes, production<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>procurement and\u00a0<\/span>r<\/span>esearch\u00a0<\/span>and d<\/span>evelopment<\/span>. These\u00a0<\/span>four<\/span>\u00a0business function<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0will have the biggest influence on greening the industry\u2019s landscape.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Companies\u00a0<\/span>are expecting<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>their employees<\/span>\u00a0to help to improve daily operations in all facets. Among these are\u00a0<\/span>three<\/span>\u00a0big reduction effort<\/span>s:<\/span>\u00a0Redu<\/span>c<\/span>tion in Green<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>House Gas<\/span>es<\/span>\u00a0(GHG) emissions, reductions in usage of water and of course in energy<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Some student<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0will have good opportunities to c<\/span>onduct<\/span>\u00a0an internship\u00a0<\/span>in green supply chain and risk management<\/span>, as companies have already started to rethink their business processes. Even in the past<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0students have written\u00a0<\/span>their<\/span>\u00a0master<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0thesis in these areas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Zeltinger: <\/strong>Unfortunately, this is unavoidable. O<\/span><\/span>ne positive thing is that this will<\/span><\/span>\u00a0give education a strong push into\u00a0<\/span><\/span>digitali<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>ation<\/span><\/span>. This has already started a decade ago, when some universities and professors offered their lectures via internet, first in audio\u00a0<\/span><\/span>and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>then in video format. It may lead<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0more\u00a0<\/span><\/span>standardi<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>ation<\/span><\/span>\u00a0of certain basic topics<\/span><\/span>. Standard lectures like introduction to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>l<\/span><\/span>ogistics can be offered to students via internet. Students can then individually learn with their own speed.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0On the other\u00a0<\/span><\/span>hand<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0face-to-face\u00a0<\/span><\/span>lesson<\/span><\/span>s with students will still be required, but in a different mode.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In your opinion, what are essential traits that students should have when seeking opportunities in the logistics industry?<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Zeltinger: <\/strong>Students should be prepared for taking over management roles and they have to acquire the ability to see the big picture – to visualise processes from start to end. Companies expect students to show and apply their academic knowledge to add innovative ideas, think differently out of the box and be able to foresee what may happen. Effective problem-solving skills and continually seeking improvements are capabilities that companies expect from their employees and management.<\/p>\n

In view of growing importance of digitalisation, students should pick up some intense knowledge in IT features and IT systems such as ERP, SCM WHM, while being aware about digitalisation and automation opportunities on IoT and Industry 4.0.<\/p>\n

Students also must find the rights answers to the upcoming challenges that I have mentioned. This is not just learnt at university. Gaining experiences would be one of the first steps in their professional career and they would need a well-based and sound knowledge on the logistics business. That is what TUM wants to impart through its teachings. However, learning does not end here – it is a lifelong process.<\/p>\n

Last but not least, students should keep their honesty and hold up and improve their morale and ethics.<\/p>\n
