Advancing theories to deepen knowledge

Bao Hongyu, Class of 2024, MSc in Integrated Circuit Design

What meets the eye isn’t always true. This is certainly the case with Hongyu, whose quiet and calm demeanour belied the optimistic pronouncement and enthusiasm that continues to burble from the talk of his approaching PhD position that he is about to pursue.

Hongyu graduated from Xi’an Jiaotong Liverpool University in Suzhou, majoring in integrated circuit design. He has already set his sights on deepening his knowledge in this field.

“During my bachelor’s studies, I was particularly interested in radio frequency circuit design. So, I wanted to continue with that. I learned about the master’s in integrated circuit design offered here, which provides extensive knowledge from analog to digital circuit design.” recalls Hongyu.

The extensive syllabus, coupled with the structured curriculum, which comprised coursework, internship, and master’s thesis, exposed Hongyu to the latest currents of integrated circuit design. Most importantly, he had the chance to dive deeper into radio frequency circuit design.

Eventually, the academic rigour and practical experience became more personal for him. It became his calling.

Driven intrinsically by his profound interest in deepening his knowledge of the theory behind those great chip designs, he hopes to leverage this knowledge to nurture future generations.

“I have always been very interested in radio frequency circuit design. So, I took my internship in Skyworks Global, where I learnt the designs and some theories about the radio frequency circuit, such as low noise amplifiers and directional couplers.  And I’m just glad to have found a PhD position in RFIC engineering,” smiled Hongyu.

“There are many great inventions and discoveries borne out from the fundamental theories upon which they rest. I want to learn these theories, and hopefully, I can teach and witness myself how these theories are bringing bigger and greater innovations of our time,” said Hongyu.
