5 Benefits of a German-Singapore Degree

People who come across the Technical University of Munich (TUM) campus in Asia, often have this question in mind: How will having a joint German-Singapore degree benefit me?

Here’s five main reasons why students choose our degree programmes at TUM Asia.

#1: If you want to change the world, you will need the best training there is

Our joint Master degrees in Singapore are taught by academia from both TUM in Germany and NUS or NTU in Singapore. All 3 universities consistently come up top in acclaimed global university ranking charts such as the QS World Rankings and Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

  • TUM is ranked as Germany’s #1 University (ARWU 2016, QS 2015)
  • NUS is ranked as Asia’s #1 University (QS 2015 and 2016)
  • NTU is ranked as Asia’s #1 Young University, Globally Placed #2 (Times Higher Education’s Top 150 Under 50)

Additionally, TUM has partnered Singapore’s newest autonomous university, Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT), to offer TUM Bachelor degrees here in Singapore. The programmes are taught in English by TUM Professors, whereas they are taught only in German in Munich.

#2: Work anywhere you want to

Having a recognized degree is one of the main criterions during the search process. We recognize that graduates need to look good and feel good at the same time.

Looking good is always easy when your degree is from the most recognized universities in the world. TUM is ranked #11 in the Global Employability Survey 2015 conducted by The New York Times. This was based on responses by global recruiters on the employ-ability of graduates from various universities.

Both NUS and NTU are renowned in Asia for delivering some of the best talent to the industry and therefore, graduates from TUM Asia will have a choice to start their career in Asia or Europe, or even in the Americas where these universities are gaining recognition. This is further strengthened by the facts. Over 70% of TUM Asia alumni are working in Asia while the rest are in Europe or the Americas. More than 15% are pursuing their doctoral studies in renowned institutions all over the world, such as TUM, RWTH Aachen and ETH Zuerich.

#3: German engineering and Asian ingenuity

Germany is known as the Land of Ideas and the term “German Engineering” is associated with quality, excellence and technical greatness. Combine that with the context of Asia –China and India already making up one-third of the world’s consumer population – and the widespread embrace of technology among Asian consumers, our degree programmes offer students a competitive edge in understanding market trends.

This dual-perspective will also allow students to combine best practices across the two continents to produce new solutions to the ever-evolving global landscape. Germany and Singapore enjoy many similarities in top-notch infrastructure, such as world class transport systems, award-winning airports and airlines, a strong supporting industry landscape and excellent academic institutions.

#4: Talent pipeline from University to Industry

Singapore, though one of the smallest countries (by geographical distance) in the world, is home to some of the biggest companies in the world. Major brands and market leaders have set-up their regional headquarters in Singapore and have also employed Singapore as their import or export hub. The city-like state of Singapore also means you can commute to work within a hour or two, no matter which part of the island-country.

This makes it attractive for graduates to assimilate into the industry. Our German roots also mean that students find it easily to join a German firm and then be relocated to anywhere in the world. TUM Asia has strong industry networks with the major industry leaders. Our tie-ups in projects, scholarships and career fairs or workshops allow graduates to make first-hand contact with these “dream” companies from an early stage.

#5: Meet the world in the classroom

Because Singapore is a choice destination, we receive applications from over 50 different nationalities of students in our graduate programmes. Students in the Bachelor courses will have the opportunity to spend three to five months in Germany as part of their course. Therefore, the classroom experience will include meeting others from a variety of nationalities, backgrounds and cultures. Students have often commented that they learnt to be more open-minded through interaction with different nationalities and the different cultural paradigms usually result in new innovative methods of problem solving.

They leave the course seeing the world differently. Our German professors also provide a continental view on subjects, while their Asian counterparts bring in the local context. Our classroom provides a good test-bed for the workplace, where it has been leveled by globalization. The ability to work with people from different cultures is now an essential skill for the workplace and there is no better place to start than in our classroom.

All our programmes are taught by a mix of German and Singaporean (or Asian) professors/lecturers, from both industry and the university.
